About SpeedWise
SpeedWise is an independent website with a free internet speed test and calculators that explain what the results mean. It was started by the Crushjs Team after too many evenings of wondering whether a slow video call was the Wi-Fi, the provider or the other person's connection, and finding that most speed tests gave a number without explaining it.
What we believe
- Measure honestly. We test with incompressible data, ignore the ramp-up at the start and report the steady speed, with no rounding up to make results look better.
- Explain the result. A number is only useful if you know what it means for streaming, gaming and calls, so every result comes with a plain-language verdict.
- Respect your privacy. No sign-up and no app. Your test history stays in your own browser.
How the test works
SpeedWise runs on Cloudflare Workers, which serve the test from more than 300 cities worldwide. Your browser connects to the nearest one. The download test reads incompressible files over several connections at once; the upload test sends random data that the server counts and immediately throws away. Latency is measured with the browser's high-resolution Resource Timing data, which excludes the time your browser spends preparing the request.
Limits of any speed test
A speed test measures the path between your device and one server at one moment. Wi-Fi, other devices, your browser and the time of day all affect the result. If you're comparing against your provider's promise, test several times over a wired connection.
